A New Investment Direction in Engineering Plastics -- PEEK

2022-06-15

Under increasingly severe resource and environmental constraints and the rapid development of new industrial demands, specialty engineering plastics such as PEEK have been widely used in aerospace, national defense, electronic semiconductors, medical devices, transportation and many other fields in recent years. As a strategic high-end material, its development not only supports national pillar industries and modern high-tech industries, but also promotes the transformation of traditional industries and the adjustment of product structures.

With the continuous innovation and development of specialty engineering plastics such as PEEK, their varieties are increasing and performance is improving. Resins such as PEEK (polyetheretherketone), PI (polyimide) and PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) have all achieved industrialization, and the gap with foreign countries in raw material synthesis, production scale and performance is narrowing. All of this is inseparable from the government's attention to and strong support for specialty engineering plastics. From the 'Seventh Five-Year Plan' to the 'Thirteenth Five-Year Plan,' PEEK and other specialty engineering plastics have always been a focus of national attention. The rapid development of China's specialty engineering plastics industry is inseparable from policy guidance and government support, as can be seen from the recently introduced policies encouraging the development of the PEEK and other specialty engineering plastics industries.

1) The National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Commerce issued the 'Catalogue of Encouraged Industries for Foreign Investment (2019 Edition),' which highlights chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing including: PEEK (polyetheretherketone), PI (polyimide), differentiated and functional polyester (PET), polyoxymethylene, polyphenylene sulfide; polysulfone, polyethersulfone, polyarylate (PAR), polyphenylene oxide and other specialty engineering plastics.

2) The NDRC's 'Three-Year Action Plan for Enhancing the Core Competitiveness of Manufacturing Industry (2018-2020)' includes key chemical new material technology industrialization projects: aromatic ketone polymers: PEEK (polyetheretherketone), polyether ketone, polyether ketone ketone; polyether ether nitrile, polyphenylene sulfide; polyphenylene oxide, etc.
